🔥 Spaces are limited and do fill up fast

Take your language skills to the next level!

Always wanted to strike up a conversation with someone in the piazza? Or ask the waiter which red he recommends to go with the tagliatelle al ragù? Maybe you’d love to hear local recommendations from your taxi driver?

There’s nothing more satisfying than talking to someone in their native language – you’ll see the surprise and delight on their faces the moment you open your mouth and start speaking Italian!

Even if you don't say everything perfectly, you’ll connect with people on another level and be welcomed into their culture in a way that wouldn’t happen if you were just another English-speaking tourist.

I knew I was making progress when I was in a bar in Camogli, and suddenly I realised I could understand every single word. I'm more fluent. My accent is better. It’s such a sense of achievement.

Louise, student

We know exactly what you’re struggling with!

We get it. Remembering grammar and vocabulary can be complicated and tedious. It can be nerve-wracking trying to hold a conversation. And learning on and off makes it hard to know where you should focus your time and energy.

The good news is fixing these problems is easier than you might think, with friendly lessons, regular conversation practice and a structured plan that makes sure you're learning a little each and every day!

I keep making the same mistakes
I don't feel like I'll ever be able to speak fluently
I find it hard to make time to study
I find it hard to stick to a routine
I forget everything when I try to speak
I try to formulate sentences based on how I’d say it in English

Courses & Curriculum

Our four flagship courses are designed to help you move forwards at a steady pace as you grow more and more proficient.

Each course lasts for one year, split into three modules. You'll progress alongside your classmates and teachers, levelling up as you go. Each module takes four months to complete – three months of structured learning followed by a month to Recharge & Review.

Beginner to Intermediate

Learn the basics and build up to chatting Italian at an intermediate level.

Beginner to Intermediate curriculum

Learn the basics and build up to chatting Italian at an intermediate level.

Module 101

Foundation

It all starts here. As well as checking off the basics, you'll also learn how to learn Italian, with tips like ‘the tomorrow test’ preventing you from getting overwhelmed by vocabulary. You’ll be taught how to notice patterns to help the different verb endings stick in your memory.

Here’s a sample curriculum –

Grammar

  • Those pesky word endings and why they keep changing.
  • The passato prossimo: the "being" past vs. the "doing" past.
  • 7 ways to say "the": il, la, l', i, le, gli, lo...
  • 3 easy verbs that help you sound Italian: potere, dovere and volere.
  • The very irregular (but very useful) verbs you need to know.
  • Possessives, a.k.a. who owns what: il mio, il tuo, i miei, i tuoi...
  • Words that like to hang out together: al, del, sul, nella...

Vocabulary

  • Remember the words with memory hooks.
  • Bello, buono and bravo.
  • Talk about food (an essential skill in Italian!)

  • What job do you do?
  • Tell us about your friends and family.
  • What did you do yesterday or last weekend?
  • What does a typical day look like for you?
  • What kinds of things do you eat in your country?

Module 102

Elementary

Learn to start talking spontaneously about everyday topics. You’ll keep up your practice of the basics so things start feeling more natural and instinctive, while developing an understanding of the logic behind some of that tricker (but very common!) grammar so you can start using it in conversation.

Here’s a sample curriculum –

Grammar

  • Conditionals: the friendliest verb forms.
  • Reflexives: the “self” verbs.
  • A review of the past.
  • Objects: things that have stuff happen to them (mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi…)

  • How to say “some”
  • Tutto (vs. tutta, tutti and tutte).
  • The most natural way to talk about “people”.
  • Two ways to say “every day”.
  • How to talk about daily activities.

Speaking

  • Review important “get to know you” stuff: names, jobs, nationality, hobbies.
  • What's your favourite (and least favourite) part of the day?
  • Tell us about important events in your life.
  • Practice giving excuses, a key skill in any language!
  • What advice and opinions do you share with your friends?
  • What kind of presents do you like to give and receive?

Module 103

Pre-Intermediate

Learn to use what you know in conversations! Now you've got the building blocks in place, it's time to focus on your conversation skills even more. This module is based on listening to real and spontaneous conversations in Italian. You'll get daily listening practice to train yourself to understand natives and review and refine the grammar and vocabulary you've learned so far.

Here’s a sample curriculum –

  • Review three very handy verbs: dovere, potere, volere.
  • Conditionals: the friendliest of verb forms.

Vocabulary

  • Handy conversation words: allora, invece, infatti, vabbè
  • Make comparisons with rispetto.
  • Vivere vs. abitare.
  • Time expressions: a volte, prima di, non più...
  • How Italians express emotion (it’s different from other cultures!)

Frequently asked questions

I'm interested in joining, but nervous about the price – how does it compare to similar programs?

The online school is a blend of self-study and face-to-face tuition via video messages and live online classes.

Katie taught in a brick-and-mortar school until recently and she wanted to create an experience that was missing from most online courses: teachers who are available to give you personalised feedback and answer your questions.

In face-to-face language schools, a 3 month course can cost over $500. Then there's the registration fee and textbook, which can add on another $70. In these courses, you only get a couple of hours contact time each week, and you might only spend a few minutes practicing speaking. Then maybe a page or two of homework.

That's not enough practice to speak Italian.

In this membership, you'll get Italian content every day, plus personal feedback on your speaking, live conversation practice and the chance to ask Italian teachers your questions. You'll also get our companion courses and coaching from teachers to get you past your study and speaking blocks.

You get the best of both worlds:

  1. The flexibility of self study, so you can learn Italian from anywhere (perfect for busy people!)

  2. The chance to practice communicating with lovely human beings - Katie, Matteo, your Italian teachers and your classmates - in a friendly environment where you can experiment without worrying about mistakes.

You'll also get personal feedback from expert teachers so you can start right: correct mistakes before they become ingrained and get pronunciation tips to sound natural when you speak.

Money Back Guarantee

Most students love the courses they buy from us and we want you to love them too. Our mission is to help you get results. If you start and decide it’s not a good fit, just send us an email within the first 30 days and as long as you've taken part in all the activities, we'll refund every penny.

How does the subscription work?

When you subscribe, you'll get immediate access to our learning platform with your bonus courses and an invite to our welcome event with live workshops. Term starts a few days later and you'll receive daily self-study lessons, weekly group conversation classes on zoom and personalised feedback via video messaging.

Your subscription renews monthly or yearly. At the end of each term, you'll automatically move up to the next level, unless you or your teacher thinks you would benefit from trying a different one. You can cancel at any time and you won't be billed any further. Plus, don't forget we offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

How do I know which course to enroll in?

We'll make sure you're assigned to the right level for you when you join. You'll take a short, simple test so we can gauge where you're at with your Italian.

Once you get started, if you don't feel you're at the right level, don't worry – we'll move you!

Our courses are specially designed for two kinds of learners:

  1. Beginner to Intermediate is right for you if you’ve been studying Italian for a while, but you still feel like a beginner. You’re learning, but you’re stuck in lots of ways, especially when it comes to speaking. If this is you, we’ll help you get unstuck and feel more comfortable conversing in Italian. This course is also for you if you’re ready to commit to learning Italian from scratch so you can focus, get into good study habits and learn what you need to start speaking.

  2. Intermediate Plus, Advanced, and Advanced Plus are for you if you can already speak Italian, but want to feel more confident and tidy things up around the edges.

Other questions about levels or course content? Send us an email to ciao@joyoflanguages.com or click the "Ask a question" button (on the bottom right of your screen or in the menu).

I'm not sure my Italian is good enough!

We've got you. We have materials for complete beginners starting from “ciao!”, and our patient and friendly teachers will help you learn everything you need so that you can prepare to start speaking your first sentences. We adapt our chatroom tasks, live lessons and teacher feedback so that they’re suitable for complete beginners. You're welcome in this membership and we'll be there to support you.

I'm already pretty good at Italian. Is this just for beginners?

We’ve got you, too! Our advanced collections are entirely in Italian and focus on helping you learn natural sounding words and phrases so that you can interact with natives and sound more like them when you speak. They’ll also help you focus on, and correct, those little mistakes that tend to stick around even at very advanced levels!

Is this a face to face conversation class?

Not in the traditional sense. Each day, you will receive stories, vocabulary and grammar lessons that you work through on your own schedule. This means that when you meet your teachers and classmates via zoom for the weekly live conversation classes, you can focus on your speaking skills.

There are also weekly speaking assignments that take place via video messaging. You can log on and leave your message whenever it's convenient for you. An Italian teacher will get back to you within a few days, sending you a video reply with your personal feedback.

When do the live conversation classes take place? How do they work?

We currently host over 100 sessions per week, covering different levels and time zones. Inside your membership area, you'll find a speaking club calendar where you can book a zoom conversation class for your level at the time that suits you.

In class, your teacher will introduce the topic and help you learn the grammar and vocabulary you need for the conversation. The teacher will then divide the class into break out rooms so you can chat together with other students of the same level.

Your teacher will circulate between the rooms, answer your questions and give you corrections, tips and encouragement to help you speak more. After class, we'll send you lesson notes so you can review what you learned.

What if I don't feel comfortable talking on video?

No problem, you can also communicate and get feedback from Italian teachers via audio or written text messages.

From zero to fluency: How long does it take?

5 minutes? 10 years? There are confusing messages about how long it takes to become fluent in Italian. The honest answer is somewhere in between.

Let's say that being fluent means you can live your life in Italian and function well in most common situations.

Studying for 30 - 60 minutes per day, from home, it will probably take around 3 years.

But that doesn't mean all toil and no fun until then!

If you're starting from zero, after a few months in the online Italian school, you'll already know how to do things like:

  • Order the right caffè (and avoid a common mistake!)
  • Get a table, order your meal and ask the waiter what's good.
  • Buy tickets to get around Italy
  • Connect with the Italians you meet by chatting about simple, everyday things, like your family, work and food – the most important stuff!

And if you stick with it, we'll show you how to get to the dream level, where you can live your life in Italian and have loads of fun along the way.

What happens if I go on vacation or if something comes up?

Everyone needs time off sometimes! We have scheduled breaks throughout the term, but if you’re due to be away or need a break mid-course, no problem. Just let us know and we'll help you catch up when you get back.

I have another question that's not addressed here!

Use the “Ask a question” button (you'll find this on the bottom right of your screen or in the menu) or send an email to ciao@joyoflanguages.com

I enrolled in the Italian course last spring and absolutely loved it. I’ve learned so much and improved my Italian skills more than I could have imagined. Everyone I spoke to during my trip to Italy last summer complimented my speaking ability – I am still shocked!

Melissa, student

We’ve already helped hundreds of people like you

Sarah Sarah

It's been very rewarding

We went to a little town called Ranzanico, north of Bergamo, where my husband's grandmother was born. There were people there that didn't speak any English at all and we were able to walk around and talk to people.
Ben

Nothing else comes close

In the past I've tried many websites/apps, Duolingo, Babbel, and they don't come close to the Joy of Languages course. They're so much more personal, informal (in a good way) and friendly. I've learnt more in the past year than I ever have!
Rebecca

Now I don't need to hide

Can't wait to visit Italy again, and this time I won't feel like I have to hide under the next table, when I want to say something :D
Lisa Lisa

Now I can talk to locals

I'd tried another course but when I got to Italy I couldn’t put the words together into even one full sentence. Everything was easier this time – at the supermarket in Naples we got talking to the cashier who couldn't believe we were from the US!
Jeff Jeff

It’s given me self belief

I get a lot of positive encouragement from the teachers at Joy of Languages. I'm 67 years old and I've learned something new about myself, doing it at an age when many people say it becomes harder to learn things.
Mary

I no longer fear speaking

My mother's family came from Italy, and I feel a very strong connection to the country. The speaking club helped me overcome my fear of speaking: I've gotten more confident, and my point gets across.
Adam Adam

It’s priceless

I stayed with friends in Veneto a couple of months ago, and I was able to use complicated tenses in natural and spontaneous ways and they were gobsmacked.
Melissa

My progress has shocked me

I enrolled last Spring and absolutely love it. I have learned so much and improved my Italian speaking skills more than I could have imagined – everyone I spoke to during my trip to Italy last summer complimented my speaking ability.
Poppy

I feel much more confident

I really ‘ummed and aahed’ as it is expensive in comparison to others, but I decided to commit because of the immersion and getting stuff five days a week. I have a holiday booked in Italy in July and am starting to feel confident and excited.
Jeff Jeff

Friendly + fun = fluency

It’s friendly, but you learn the necessary grammar you would get in a university class. And the ability to practise makes it so much fun. You get that fluency and the expressions that fill the gaps between simply stating things in a stilted way.
Jim

You’ll surprise yourself

My vocabulary has grown. I can pick up new things a little faster. We learned some grammar, conditionals, and I didn’t know what they were at first. And then before you know it, they sneak into your conversation and it doesn’t feel hard.
Zhanna Zhanna

I love the flexibility
